UHS Demonstrates Its Expertise With Successful Neurosurgery For Rare Lesion

In line with its vision to offer world-class healthcare services, the University Hospital Sharjah performed a successful neurosurgery for a rare type of bone tumor in the skull known as ‘Osteoid Osteoma.’ The procedures were carried out by experts from neurosurgery, as well as plastic surgery. The 61-year-old patient had presented with a two-centimeter-long painful swelling on her forehead. As the diagnostic procedures progressed, it was discovered that the lesion was both internal and external. The patient was advised to undergo immediate excision, and experts were notified, with the surgery being led and performed by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Jesrani, Specialist Neurosurgeon who comes with 13 years of clinical experience in the field of Neurosurgery, is also a member of World Spinal Column Society. The team was successful in approaching the lesion beneath the hairline and performing a complete tumor excision Due to its position on the forehead, the lesion required additional cosmetic care after the successful surgery. Consequently, Dr. Noh, a certified plastic surgeon, was brought in to perform the cosmetic treatments on the lesion.  Dr. Ali Obaid Al Ali, UHS Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of Trustees, stated: The University Hospital Sharjah decided to develop its own sub-specialized surgery plans, as we are equipped with pioneering professional consultants and advanced operation theaters. We hope to serve patients from the UAE and GCC, where they get to take advantage of our expertise and standardized quality services and ensure a healthy life. At UHS, we also aim to broaden our services by accepting cases from neighboring countries, covering nearly all insurance premiums.

A new treatment technique for treating knee conditionse

The University Hospital Sharjah, through its Himchan Spine and Joint Centre, is now conducting Meniscus Allograft Transplantation (MAT) for patients suffering from severe knee conditions as a result of permanently damaged menisci. A meniscus is a thin fibrous cartilage between the surfaces of some joints like the knee. The surgery has been found to be effective in 85 per cent of patients treated by the hospital’s leading orthopedic surgeon. MAT is a minimally invasive transplant surgery that uses advanced endoscopy which involves obtaining a C-shaped cartilaginous tissue called meniscus from a donor. It is transplanted into the patient’s knee. Since this meniscus is biologically identical to the patient’s own, the engraftment rate is remarkably high and there is no transplant rejection. According to the hospital, the procedure can be done in 90 minutes, and it leaves only a minimal scar. MAT patients can also start walking six weeks after the operation and exercise after three months.
